A twenty-nine-year-old mason who allegedly broke and entered another man’s home and stole over $3.7M in tools and other household appliances was granted bail by Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson yesterday when he appeared before her at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.
Winston Fordyce, a father of four, of Lot I Grant Sand Road, Soesdyke, East Bank Demerara, was not required to plead to the indictable charge of break and enter and larceny.
Fordyce is accused of breaking and entering the home of Clairmonte Walters and stealing a quantity of tools, clothing, furniture and several household appliances valued over $3.7M, on April 8 at Yarowkabra, Linden.
However, Fordyce’s lawyer, Mark Waldron applied for bail for him stating that he had been in police custody at the Timehri Police Station since last Saturday. The lawyer had also requested that the matter be sent to the Providence Magistrate’s Court.
The prosecution made no objections to the bail application but stated that a microwave that was stolen from Walters’s residence was found at Fordyce’s home during the police investigations.
The prosecution had also requested that the case jacket for the matter be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions for advice and then Fordyce would be allowed to plead to the charges.
Waldron then informed the court that the microwave that was found was of a similar brand as the one allegedly stolen but that did not mean that it was the same one.
The magistrate subsequently granted Fordyce bail in the sum of $300,000 and ordered that the matter be transferred to the Providence Magistrate’s Court for April 7.
