The 17-year-old who allegedly fatally stabbed her stepfather on Wednesday evening remained in police custody up to press time yesterday; her relatives were silent on the incident.
A post-mortem examination is expected to be conducted on the body of Glendon Scipio today. The 54-year-old security guard was stabbed to death just after 6 pm on Wednesday, following an altercation with his stepdaughter at their 78 Victoria Road, Plaisance home.
Esther Simon, Scipio’s reputed wife and mother of the teen, told Stabroek News yesterday that she was “in no frame of mind to speak”. She said her daughter was still in police custody and she knew “nothing more about that”. When asked about the relationship between her daughter and Scipio, the woman burst into tears and was unable to comment.
A woman, who said she was the deceased man’s niece, told Stabroek News yesterday that he was a quiet person. The woman said she and Simon were distressed and would prefer not to speak about the incident.
“He wasn’t the sort of man to harass anyone or create trouble,” a former manager of Scipio told this newspaper yesterday.
Colleagues, who said they had worked with Scipio for more than ten years, described him as being “nomadic”. Scipio, they said, had lived at three difference addresses during the past five years.
Reports were that the stepdaughter was at a neighbour’s house helping a child with homework when she left to go home in order to prepare to go to church.
The deceased, who was at home alone up to that time, reportedly prevented the girl from entering the house.
A heated argument ensued in the yard, during which Scipio allegedly dealt his stepdaughter several punches to her face. The young woman is alleged to have picked up a piece of wood and hit the man in retaliation.
The man, neighbours said, then hit the girl again, after which she ran upstairs and returned with a knife. The argument continued during which the young woman stabbed Scipio in his chest. According to residents, someone tried to intervene but this proved futile.
Neighbours said Scipio and his stepdaughter were regularly involved in heated arguments.
