A fifty-two-year-old man, who allegedly chopped his uncle several times about his head and body after a heated argument between them, was remanded to prison yesterday when he appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.
Christopher Anderson of 256 Kaikan Street, North Ruimveldt, was not required to plead to the indictable charges of attempted murder and assault with intent to prevent lawful apprehension.
Anderson is accused of unlawfully wounding Garnett Woolford with intent to murder him and also assaulting Police Constable Mortimer Smith as he was executing his duties in arresting him shortly after the incident on April 21.
Anderson stated that he was a self-employed “legal, industrial and social counselor” but that he wished to say nothing at the time about the incident.
However, Prosecutor Munilall Seetaram said that the court should not consider granting Anderson bail since Woolford was still hospitalized. He said that Wolford’s condition was “stable but serious”.
Seetaram noted that Anderson had chopped Woolford several times about his body with a cutlass shortly after a disagreement between them.
The prosecutor also stated that Anderson would usually threaten to kill Woolford every time they had a disagreement.
Seetaram went on to say that while Smith was attempting to arrest Anderson shortly after the incident “he threw a hot cup of coffee in de policeman face.”
The police had stated that Woolford had lost his left eye as a result of the incident. They said that several chop wounds were also evident to his head and other parts of his body.
The magistrate subsequently ordered that Anderson be remanded to prison and that he return to court on April 30.
