Caribbean category for US census
A Bill calling for Caribbean nationals to have their own origins category on the US Census form has been introduced to the House of Representatives. The Bill, introduced by congresswoman Yvette Clarke, calls for the inclusion of a checkbox or similar option, so that respondents may indicate Caribbean extraction or descent.
The campaign group, Carib ID, seeks to get Caribbean nationals accurately counted in the 2010 census.
Congresswoman Clarke, who is the daughter of Caribbean immigrants, said she sees the measure as a great accomplishment.
Minister seeks audience with business leaders
The Labour Minister of St Kitts and Nevis Sam Condor has called a meeting with social and business leaders, to discuss possible placements for employees who have lost their jobs as a result of the weakened global economy.
Mr Condor has requested the talks in light of the termination of 100 employees at the St Kitts Marriott, and additional layoffs at other private sector companies.
He said the situation calls for a sober and mature response and effective leadership.
