The 13 professional women vying for the fifth Ms Renaissance title on October 24 will be revealed tomorrow at the Umana Yana.
The pageant will be held at the National Cultural Centre as usual, under the theme `Visions of our Culture’. This year’s contestants come from a variety of backgrounds; there is a teacher, a nurse and a former media worker in the line up.
Only guests can attend tomorrow’s event as admission is by invitation only.
The pageant, according to the organizers has the support of Tourism Minister Manniram Prashad and Public Service Minister Dr Jennifer Westford and they along with several other special guests will be at the Umana Yana.
This is the first time that the contestants are being introduced and the occasion will be used to also sash them before they head into months of intense training to get them ready for the competition.
One of the pageant coordinators, Desiree Edghill told The Scene that senior educational official Bonita Hunter will give a talk on domestic violence, paying special attention to the reasons why men perpetrate this act on women.
She also revealed that a former contestant, Carol Fraser-Lindie will display some of her fashion pieces during the event. Fraser-Lindie was a crowd favourite in last year’s staging of the pageant but did not place. The mother of one has been a fashion designer and artist for over 23 years. She also has a wealth of experience in pageantry having entered several in her younger days.
During the wee hours of November 2 last, Quacy Mc Gowan a teacher of Mae’s Schools snatched the coveted crown and title from 12 other mature and professional women after hours of stiff competition.
Patricia Helwig was adjudged first runner-up, Renita Crandon-Duncan came in second runner-up while Mayor and City Council employee, Jacqueline King had to settle for the third runner-up spot.
The Ms Renaissance pageant caters for women aged 28 years and over, allowing them to show off their accomplishments, inner beauty, maturity, leadership skills, cultural awareness and talent.
During the talent (cultural presentation) segment of the competition on pageant night, various aspects of our culture are displayed.
