The Ministry of Tourism, Industry and Commerce has urged providers of courier services to remedy the shortfalls in their operations and give Guyanese customers the service that they pay for.
According to a Government Information Agency (GINA) press release Minister Manniram Prashad told courier companies at a meeting that several complaints had been made about poor service. It had been reported that many couriers advertise a three-day delivery period but then customers are sometimes forced to wait for as long as a week for their packages.
In response, the couriers said they are challenged by flight delays, customs clearance and they no longer enjoy the priority service they did in the past.
However, the minister said he was still concerned that they were not delivering the service they advertise. Prashad said this was unacceptable as customers who pay for a time-specified service should expect that service to be delivered in said time. He cautioned them that if international companies with branches in Guyana did not improve their standards and services then the ministry may be forced to investigate at the level of the head offices why Guyana is being subjected to “shabby treatment”.
According to GINA Prashad said the Consumers Affairs Division is tasked with looking after consumers’ interests and while the ministry will assist, the onus is on the service provider to find and rectify the shortcomings in its operations.
