With much pomp and ceremony the Minister of Sport introduced the first female football squad to compete in the Inter-Guiana Games. Shockingly there was no representative from the Rupununi, even though the football officials consider this area to be the ‘headquarters’ of women’s football in the country.
The Rupununi region has become synonymous with female football, to such an extent that it is being touted to house the head office of the female football association.
There are many female teams in the region. In a very short period of time at least five female teams can be assembled for a competition. There are no other areas in Guyana where so many female football clubs exist.
The Guyana Football Federation has recognised the ability and numbers of female footballers in the Rupununi and would make contact with the local football association whenever any female competition was to be held.
So it was very surprising when a female team was named without any Rupununi members.
It is with great confidence that I can state that the female team presently representing Guyana in this year’s Inter-Guiana Games is a lot weaker due to the absence of representatives from the Rupununi.
