Suriname’s male and female football teams recorded victories against the French Guiana squads in the 42nd annual Inter Guiana Games Football Championship when the teams collided at the Ayanganna Ground yesterday.
French Guiana’s males went down one–nil to Suriname in the feature match of the day that had the Surinamese female team getting past their opposition in a two–nil affair.
The conclusion of these two matches sets up an exciting final against host Guyana today who will be taking on Suriname.
If Guyana are to win the football championships the males must defeat Suriname by at least three goals without conceding a goal, while the female have to win by nine goals without conceding a goal, which is virtually impossible.
In the male encounter both teams played matching football but it was evident that the Suriname team had the edge by executing better plays and controlling ball possession.
Both teams traded shots at the opposition’s goal but it was Suriname which made the first mistake and paid dearly for it. A clinical display of skill and a well-executed play by Suriname’s Esperance Evani who scored a goal in the 42nd minute gave his team the lead.
That slim one–nil lead was all Suriname needed for victory, since they defended it terrifically when the final half resumed.
French Guiana’s girls did not have what it took to inflict a whipping on Suriname as they had done to Guyana on Friday.
Suriname looked the better team from the first whistle and proved it by troubling the score line as early as the third minute, compliments of Cynthyo Sital.
An Elvido Laimmy strike in the 25th minute doubled the lead and made it a comfortable game for Suriname which defended to the end for the victory.
