The body of a 54-year-old woman was yesterday morning found on the pavement near East and New Market streets.
The woman, who has spent the last 15 years on and off the streets, has been identified as Maureen Rodney, of 158, Surat Drive, Triumph, East Coast Demerara.
According to the woman’s sister, Janet Rodney, she received a call around 8 am yesterday informing her of her sister’s demise. She said she was asked to visit the Lyken’s Funeral home to identify her sister’s remains. The woman said her younger sibling may have been murdered since she was found naked at the time of her death with a cut near to her neck.
Rodney explained that years ago her sister was a member of the Guyana National Service but had to leave after she developed a mental problem. She said her sister, who had been living on the streets for over 15 years, would return home occasionally.
Rodney related that her sister last visited her home on Wednesday and she would usually walk to and from the city with her belongings in a bag. She also said her sister would spend most of her time on the pavement where she was found yesterday morning.
The police are said to be investigating the circumstances surrounding the woman’s death.
