Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson yesterday remanded to prison the man accused of stabbing a Vryheid’s Lust man to death last Sunday as he was visiting a relative.
Thirty-one-year-old Lloyd Greene of Lot 140 Laing Avenue, West Ruimveldt, was not required to plead to the indictable charge of murder.
Greene allegedly murdered 24-year-old Earl France on April 26, while the man was visiting a relative at his home. As he was being escorted to the courtroom his family members were heard asking him if he was okay and he responded positively and in turn asked them the same.
Greene, who wore handcuffs as he stood in the dock of the
courtroom, looked expressionless as the charge was being read to him at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court. Attorney-a-law Troy Deygoo, representing the accused, stated that “my client is unfit to stand trial.”
He noted that Greene was not of sound mental health and had been undergoing psychiatric treatment for the last eight years at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC).
The lawyer then presented to the prosecution a document which he said corroborates this.
Deygoo then applied for bail for his client arguing that a short while before and even after the incident his client had not received any of his medications for his ill health.
However, Prosecutor Denise Griffith objected to the bail application stating that at the time of the incident Greene was sane.
She noted that Greene had stopped his treatment from the hospital since September last year. The prosecutor said in that situation Greene’s relatives should have known better and kept him off the road.
She added that the incident may not be Greene’s fault but his family’s who hadn’t taken him to the hospital for his medication.
Griffith then requested that Deygoo present the court on Greene’s next appearance with a medical certificate of his mental condition.
The magistrate subsequently ordered that Greene be remanded to prison and that he appear back in court on June 12.
Reports are that France of Vryheid’s Lust, East Coast Demerara was fatally stabbed once with a knife to his left side chest that pierced the left side region of his heart during an argument with Greene. He was rushed to the GPHC by relatives but was pronounced dead on arrival.
