Minister of Labour Manzoor Nadir has urged workers to commit to the principle of strength in unity.
In a message to mark May Day being observed today, Nadir said workers should also continue to commit to their representative organisations; to building workers’ cooperatives and credit unions and ensuring that their voices are heard against violations of workers’ rights.
He also asked that employers and their organisations in turn commit to treat with workers as the most valuable resources in their enterprises and to commit to the principals enshrined in the ILO Decent Work Agenda.
“May Day 2009 reaches many of our workers at a time when uncertainty about job security lurks large,” the minister said. “While Guyana has this far been spared the ravages of major layoffs, the government continues to monitor closely the global and national economic situation and will respond to ameliorate possible hardships on our workers.”
The message said also that the PPP/C has a proud record of championing the rights of workers, representing them for better wages and working conditions and social and human development of workers and their families.
He said government would continue in its endeavour to ensure that Guyanese enjoy all the elements of the Decent Work Agenda as reflective in enforcing workers rights, equality, social dialogue, security and dignity.
