Acknowledging Guyana’s vulnerability to the contagion of the current global financial crisis, President Bharrat Jagdeo told workers that government would remain alert to any possible fallout and engage the labour movement in solving problems that may affect them.
In his May Day message, Jagdeo said that though Guyana has not “been as severely affected as other countries,” interventions have been made in the local economy to safeguard the interests of workers and to protect them against the perils associated with forces beyond government’s immediate control. He said that his government is fully committed to the protection of workers’ rights, the preservation of other gains earned and the continuous improvement in their working and living standards.
As workers in Guyana wrestle with the many challenges that confront our nation, he added, “I wish to assure them of the wholehearted support of the government in advancing their social and economic well-being and in creating a just, secure and progressive future for them and for succeeding generations.”
