Dear Editor,
Former Presidents are eligible for benefits and facilities in any country. In Guyana through custom and practice many constitutional holders of office including former presidents are and have been enjoying benefits and conditions that are not in law.
The PNCR attacked the decision by government to have the benefits and conditions of former presidents put into law. What the PNCR did not tell Guyanese was their negotiation with the state for benefits of the Opposition Leader, namely, a vacation allowance; free medical treatment for the leader and dependent members of his family; technical, clerical and administrative staff; furnished office accommodation paid for by the state; chauffeur; personal security and security services.
Yours faithfully,
