Dear Editor,
At the Guyana Trades Union Congress Labour Day Rally on Friday May 1, 2009, motions were passed calling for an end to the imposition of salary increases; the reintroduction of the CLC grant; the reintroduction of the GTUC grant; the high cost of living; unemployment; human rights abuses; government corruption; the suppression of free speech; the suppression of information about CLICO; the management of state entities; and the substantive appointment of acting Chief Education Officer Genevieve White-Nedd.
These are good motions which cannot be faulted. Workers once again seem central to the GTUC agenda.
This year both FITUG and GTUC called for unity. It is hoped FITIG will unite with the GTUC to make the motions possible. All workers, regardless of their union affiliation can benefit. Whether FITUG and GTUC become one or remain separated is immaterial. What matters is uniting around those motions which it is reasonable to con-clude FITUG will not fault.
Yours faithfully,
Martin Roberts
