A 21-year-old man charged with the murder of taxi driver Rolston Bernard Henry appeared yesterday before Magistrate Yohhannseh Cave at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court.
It is alleged that between May 2 and May 3 at La Bonne Intention (LBI), Clifton Graham (no address given) murdered Rolston Bernard Henry.
When asked by the magistrate if he was represented by an attorney or if relatives were in court with him, the defendant who bore an expressionless look quietly replied in the negative.
He did say, however, that some family members had paid him a brief visit at the Sparendaam Police Station at approximately 7 am yesterday.
Meanwhile, Magistrate Cave told the defendant that he is being given an opportunity until his next court date to get a lawyer.
The unrepresented Graham was subsequently remanded to prison until May 15 for reports.
As the defendant was being escorted out of the courtroom by police officers, the family members of the deceased were wailing loudly in the courtyard. Henry was found with his throat slashed at Onion Field, LBI, East Coast Demerara (ECD) on Sunday.
His hands were bound behind his back, he was gagged and his body bore stab wounds. There were also burn marks to his chest. A post-mortem examination revealed that he died of haemorrhaging and shock due to incised wounds. Police in a statement had said that the body was discovered at 4.30 pm on Sunday at LBI and bore marks of violence to the throat and other parts and his hands were tied behind his back with wire. The car that Henry operated, PKK 9036, had been found earlier at 6.30 am in a trench at Plaisance, ECD. The amplifier was missing.
On Tuesday, a source told this newspaper that a gold and silver ring and an amplifier from the car that Henry was driving were recovered.
