A 19-year-old American citizen charged with the offence of trafficking in narcotics was yesterday remanded to prison when she appeared before Magistrate Hazel Octive-Hamilton at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.
It is alleged that on May 6 at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, Timehri, Diamond Rebecca Boulware had in her possession 1 kilogram, 22 grams of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking.
Boulware pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to her.
Attorney-at-law Pamela De Santos who represented the defendant made a bail application and explained to the court that her client has a history of psychiatric ailment. Magistrate Octive-Hamilton however told De Santos that according to law “psychiatric ailment does not fall within the special circumstances bracket.”
The attorney then explained that sufficient and in-depth instructions relating to the matter had not yet been sought from her client and as a result made a request for the matter to be adjourned for a short date so that proper instructions can be sought.
At this point the magistrate ruled that an application for bail should not even have been made since the defence counsel had not yet been properly instructed by the client.
Boulware was subsequently remanded to prison until May 15.
