GEORGETOWN, Cayman Islands, CMC – Guyana’s world-rated squash player Nicolette Fernandes was knocked out of the Cayman Islands on Wednesday night when she suffered a defeat to American Latasha Khan.
Playing at the South Sound Squash Club, the 25-year old Fernandes won the first game at 11-9 but then capitulated to lose the next three games 12-14, 1-11, 5-11 in just under an hour.
It was a huge disappointment for Fernandes who seemed en route to an easy win at 10-5 in the second game, before losing her way.
“I thought I played really well in the first two. I should have had the second, should have won so I’m really gutted to lose,” Fernandes said.
Leading 10-5 in the second game, Khan saved two game points and launched a superb comeback to lead 13-12 before pushing ahead to level the games at 1-1.
Fernandes was crushed in the third game and though she fought back bravely with strong rallies in the fourth, she succumbed meekly in the end to a tough opponent in Khan.
