Guyana’s rifle shooters will wing out today to defend their title at the West Indies Fullbore championships billed for this week in neighbouring Trinidad and Tobago.
The nine-man squad under the captaincy of National Champion Mahendra Persaud and reigning regional Individual Champion Ransford Goodluck will be joined by three Guyanese shooters based in the United States.
Persaud said the squad has had adequate preparation leading up to the regional championships and he was confident of the Guyana team performing outstandingly at the event.
He disclosed that all the shooters are currently at the top of their game as was evident in last weekend’s Crown Mining Postal match held at the Timehri Rifle ranges.
“I shot the lowest score last Sunday and the team effort was remarkable, so all the shooters are on top of their game,” said Persaud.
The shooters started their preparation earlier this year and that preparation included the National championships which Persaud won.
There were also several recorded shoots as well as the Postal match.
The squad features several experienced shooters while one marksman will be making his debut at that level of competition.
The squad will include vice captain Dylan Fields, Richard ‘Dickie’ Fields, Claude Duguid, Dane Blair, Ryan Sampson, Lt-Col Terry Stuart and Charles Deane.
The US-based shooters are Sigmund Douglas, Derick Narine and John Fraser.
Lt-Col Stuart and Charles, who will be making his debut, will contest the ‘O’ division in the Individual competition.
The West Indies tournament will get cracking tomorrow with a practice shoot for all the participants at the Tucker Valley Ranges in Port of Spain.
The Individual competition will commence on Tuesday with Goodluck who excelled at last year’s regional event in Jamaica starting his defence of the title.
The first team match will take place on Friday and there will be a break on Saturday before the team championship on Sunday.
The Guyanese team will be hard pressed to retain their title from arch-rivals Trinidad and Tobago, who will be looking to take full advantage of their home conditions.
Jamaica and Barbados will also be looking to stop the dominance of the Guyanese and Trinidadians while Antigua/Barbuda will be seeking to improve their showing at this level of competition.
Guyana are the reigning regional short and long-range champions, but only the short-range title will be up for grabs because there are only short ranges at Tucker Valley.
