I write in connection with the article in Friday’s SN where it was reported that the Advisory Committee on Broadcasting had cited CN Sharma for two violations and requested him to take remedial action. I am more interested in the religious contention where a statement was made by the Pastors in the programme ‘Universal Church Hour’ alleging they could cure people of any incurable disease including HIV/ AIDS. The committee is of the opinion that such a statement (untried and unsubstantiated) could have an adverse effect since some individuals will eschew proper medical treatment hoping for a religious miracle.
Now I first would like to state that I agree one should exercise caution with such claims, as not all churches have a healing ministry. However, we see on TV religious persons using not necessarily similar language, but relying on faith saying that nothing is impossible to God, and that I sincerely believe.
We must not limit God’s power; it is the messenger who at times is incapable. My own life is a living testimony to the greatness of God where he used medical science as an intervention to cure me of a life-threatening disease. And I am certain that there are many who share experiences of healing through faith.
