The four Canadian nationals, who were arrested early Tuesday morning after 9 kilogrammes (kg), 89 grammes (g) of cocaine was found concealed behind false walls in nine suitcases, remain in police custody and are expected be charged shortly.
“Police are asking them all sorts of questions to try and get as much information as we can,” a senior police source said yesterday.
The Canadians, according to the source, are expected to appear before the Magistrate’s Court sometime today or tomorrow charged with possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking.
They were the latest drug couriers in a parade of them recently which law enforcement sources said suggests a desperate cash crunch in some rings abroad. Sources also suggest that with the depressed circumstances up north more and more willing recruits are available for narcotics runs. Sources said that the stashing of the cocaine Tuesday in nine suitcases was indicative of a determined effort to avoid the detection of the cocaine by spreading it around. The two males and two females were outgoing passengers on a flight at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA), Timehri.
