A thirty-two-year-old man who broke into another man’s home and stole a DVD player among several other items was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment when he appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.
Keith Bowen of Lot 88 James Street, Albouystown, pleaded guilty to the charge of break and enter and larceny.
It was alleged that Bowen broke and entered the home of Albert Williams on May 4 and stole a DVD player, a Universal remote, a cordless phone and several other items totaling $25,500 in value.
Bowen, however, stated that Williams’ son was the one who stole the items and gave them to him to sell. He explained that was why the police found the articles in his possession.
He said that Williams’ son was also arrested but was subsequently released.
However, Prosecutor Munilall Seetaram stated that on the day in question Williams secured his home and went out while his reputed wife was sleeping in the house.
He said that sometime later the wife got up and found the back door open. She then made checks about the house and discovered that the items were missing.
Bowen was contacted and he admitted to the break-in. Shortly after he was arrested he took the police to some bushes where he had hidden the items and he was subsequently charged. Bowen pleaded with the magistrate to have mercy on him and he was then sentenced to two years’ imprisonment.
