Dear Editor,
I refer to Mr Aubrey Alexander’s letter captioned ‘Land should be reserved in the new housing schemes for recreational facilities, etc’ (SN May 13). Personally I can attest to the lack of recreational facilities, but let me hasten to say that identifying areas for a playground, etc, is only the beginning of a supposedly long and difficult process involving those with the financial resources and political influence. If anyone had told me that approximately five years after my first letter with reference to playing facilities for children in the community of Eccles the situation would remain unchanged, I would never have believed them.
With all due respect to Mr Alexander, the times have changed considerably since the days when he and I viewed Porgy and Bess. Unfortunately the morals and values of yesteryear are non-existent today, even though more applicable now. Those in the entertainment industry are not there for sentiment but monetary gain. Maybe if Porgy and Bess were shown at the Theatre Guild it might be a success.
Yours faithfully,
Lloyd Davidson
