DIRECTV and Cityvibe continue their exclusive concert series this weekend with Welsh singer-songwriter Duffy live in concert on Channel 999; the first airing was yesterday and the series will also air today and tomorrow.
Duffy’s 2008 debut album ‘Rockferry’ entered the UK Album Chart at number one, and her hit single “Mercy” became an international favourite and chart topper.
‘Rockferry’ took nearly four years to make. Duffy had released the debut limited edition single “Rockferry” in November 2007 followed by “Mercy” which went straight to number one. This single also made Duffy the first Welsh female singer to achieve a number one pop single in 25 years. By May, “Mercy” was a staple on VH1, a Hot Adult Contemporary radio hit and had been featured in the season finale of Grey’s Anatomy as well as the soundtrack album for Sex and the City: The Movie. A remix of “Mercy” featuring The Game was released on May 10. On May 13, ‘Rockferry’ was released in the United States to positive reviews.
At the 2008 MOJO Awards, Duffy won the Song of the Year award for “Mercy” and was also nominated for Album of the Year and Breakthrough Act. These three nominations were the largest number of nominations for any one act. At the 51st Grammy Awards in February 2009 she won a Grammy in the category of Best Pop Vocal Album. Duffy equalled Coldplay with four 2009 Brit Awards nominations. She eventually won three awards, including Best British Album, Best Female Solo, and British Breakthrough. No less than two years since her debut Duffy has been nominated for seventeen awards and has won six to date.
On 1 February 2009 The Times Encyclopedia of Modern Music named her album ‘Rockferry’ an Essential Blue Eyed Soul recording. Duffy plans to begin work on her second album later this year. Regarding endorsements, she has been named the ‘star’ of a multi-million pound European Diet Coke advertising campaign.
Filmed in the intimate setting of St. Luke’s Church, London, the Duffy concert features all the singles that have rocketed her to the top including “Rockferry”, “Mercy”, and “Warwick House”. DIRECTV customers with DVR can record the show to watch again.
