The 2009 Tenelec Inc first division 50-overs-a-side round robin cricket competition, organized by the Berbice Cricket Board (BCB) for first division teams in the Ancient County, gets cracking today.
This competition, now in its second year, is once again sponsored by Tenelec Inc, a communication company based in Washington, DC, USA.
Edinburgh Cricket Club, East Bank Berbice, have become the latest to be elevated to first division status, bringing the total number of teams participating to 13.
For this competition Berbice have been divided into two geographical zones. Zone A: New Amsterdam/Canje/East Bank/West Berbice, consists of Young Warriors, Rose Hall Community Centre, Bermine, Police, Blairmont Community Centre, West Berbice and newcomer Edinburgh.
Zone B: Corentyne, comprises defending champions Albion Community Centre, Rose Hall Town Windies Sports Bar, Port Mourant, Scottsburg United, Skeldon Community Centre and Upper Corentyne.
After the preliminary round which is scheduled to be completed on Saturday June 6, the top two teams from each zone will advance to the semi-finals.
Three matches are scheduled for today’s first round with Blairmont Community Centre taking on West Berbice at Blairmont under the guidance of Rafik Latiff and Augustus Outar in Zone A action. In Zone B, Albion Community Centre will oppose Upper Corentyne at Port Mourant with Zaheer Moakan and Imran Moakan being the men in charge.
In the other Zone B encounter, Scottsburg United and Skeldon Community Centre will face each other at Scottsburg with the umpires being King and Coonjah.
All matches start at 09.30am.
