-complainant says she fears for her life
A 30-year-old carpenter was on Thursday remanded to prison for allegedly using threatening language to the mother of his child when he appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.
It is alleged that on May 13 at Georgetown, Orwin Cole of 50 Durban Street, Wortmanville made use of threatening language to Ianna Byron thereby resulting in a breach of the peace. He pleaded not guilty to the charge.
According to Cole, on the day in question he went to Byron’s residence to pay his daughter a visit when a heated argument ensued between him and the virtual complainant (VC). He stressed that he never threatened the VC but admitted cursing her.
“Meh Worship, I went fuh see me lil 15-month-old daughter that Ianna get fuh me and we had a lil talking and I cuss she but me en threaten she meh Worship.”
The VC, however, explained to the court that Cole who is unemployed and receives financial assistance from his mother who resides in the United States does not honour his paternal obligation to provide for the child. Byron went on to explain that the defendant went to her house on the day in question demanding to have sexual intercourse with her and when she refused he threatened to kill her. She stated, “My Worship, Orwin came at me and ask fuh sex, he try pushing he self on me and when I seh no he start saying ah gun chop yuh up an kill yuh. He’s a boy does smoke up he cocaine and den verbally abuse and embarrass me.”
The VC explained to the Acting Chief Magistrate that she is very afraid of the defendant and would prefer him stay away from her. “My Worship, I frighten he, I don’t want dis man around me cause I’m very scared for my life. I don’t know when he gun smoke up and trip and come an try fuh harm me.”
A probation report was ordered into the matter and the unrepresented Cole was subsequently refused bail and remanded to prison. He is to return to court May 25.
