Dear Editor,
Recent events of a criminal nature have undoubtedly shown that white collar crimes in any country are far more devastating to citizens, and more widespread and easy, than any crime committed by poor people, ie, under-privileged.
Approach a classroom in a school of your choice and challenge the students to describe what a criminal looks like, and the majority of them would utter words like unkempt, positive, scruffy, etc. However, the image of the white-collar criminal today is quite at odds with what we read in the newspapers on a daily basis. For the most part they reside in mansions and work in air-conditioned offices.
Even when caught, prosecuted and convicted, their sentences will be comparatively lighter than those of the ordinary common criminal.
The unfolding of certain events in the not-to-distant future will indicate where we are going as a nation, and how fast we will get there. The rich continue to get richer and the poor get prison.
There is sufficiency in the world for man’s need but not for man’s greed. (Mohandas K Gandhi)
Yours faithfully,
