Local golfer Lester Alvis was among the top performers at the recently staged Sir Garfield Sobers International amateur tournament in Barbados.
Alvis won the best net in his flight with a seven under par after three days of competition in the tournament which attracted more than 200 amateur golfers from the United Kingdom, United States and the Caribbean.
The tournament was played over three courses, the Barbados Golf Club, Royal West Moreland and Sandy Lane Country Club.
Also representing Guyana were Ian Gouveia, Mike Guyadin, Jerome Khan and Avinash Persaud.
Sir Garfield Sobers, the former West Indies cricketer and world record holder was on hand to present the prizes to the winners of the tournament.
Alvis, Country Manager for local furniture store Courts, disclosed that the tournament attracted several leading amateur players from Great Britain and the United States of America (USA) who were divided into six flights according to their handicaps.
Avis transformed his performance in Barbados to the local scene to win last weekend’s Citizens Bank Medal Play tournament carting off both the best net and gross scores.
Meanwhile, Guyana will be represented at the Barbados Open next month in Bridgetown.
So far seven local players have signed up to take part including Alvis, Clifford Reis, Khan, Gouveia, Alfred Mentore, Brian Gladford and Colin Ming.
The tournament will take place from June 25-28 at the Royal West Moreland Club.
