Alpha ‘The Hammer’ United brushed aside Sunburst Camptown to record another Premier League victory when action continued in the Cellink Plus sponsored tournament organized by the Georgetown Football Association (GFA) on the Tucville Playfield.
The three-time defending champions once again showed their mettle by clubbing 2008 runners-up Camptown 4-0 in the feature match of the double header while Flamingo went under to BK International Western Tigers 0-3.
Alpha dominated the play throughout the first 45 minutes and drew first blood from a Dwight Peters strike which rocketed into the back of the net in the 26th minute.
Peters received the ball as he pushed upfield and, though challenged by a defender, he managed to manoeuvre his way into the 18-yard box before blasting the ball past custodian Richie Richards.
Next minute Alpha’s Quincy Madramootoo stormed down the right flank and took the ball into the 18-yard box where Richards rushed forward only for the quick thinking Madramootoo to lob the ball over his head and into the back of the net to double the score.
Not long into the second half Shawn `Fatso’ Bishop made his presence felt when he scored from a free kick in the 57th minute as Richards appeared casual between the uprights. Peters recorded his double after he got past the slacking Camptown defence and beat the custodian with the nudge that sent the ball into the back of the net in the 88th minute.
In the Western Tigers/ Flamingo match, neither team was able to score in the first half but the fitter stronger team, Western Tigers, excelled in the latter period of the game to record their first victory of the tourney. A terrific double from Devon Millington who scored in the 62nd and 68th minutes after receiving crosses from the right and left flank that found him near the goal and a goal in the 72nd minute from Ned Fraser sealed the deal for Western Tigers.
