Marian Academy and School of the Nations conquered their rivals Cummings Lodge Secondary and President’s College (PC) respectively when competition continued on Thursday in the GBTI Inter-Secondary School Impromptu Speech contest.
According to a press release from the Bank, Marian had a formidable win; scoring 102 points more than their rivals Cummings Lodge. They scored 619 whereas Cummings Lodge scored 517 points. Marian selected topics: ‘Computers are more beneficial to education than books’, ‘I would rather be poor than rich’ and ‘Is HIV/AIDS a scare to you?’ Cummings Lodge chose the topics: ‘What can the business sector do to encourage youths to stay in school?’, ‘All secondary school students must study a second language’ and ‘Gum chewing’.
In the second match Nations defeated PC by 92 points scoring 666 points with topics: ‘Is Christmas too commercialised?’, ‘I prefer a movie to a book’ and ‘Peer pressure’. PC selected topics: ‘In today’s economic situation what do you think the best career choice is?’, ‘Can religious programmes play a positive role in today’s society?’ and ‘Cell phones do more harm than good’.
The judges for the matches were Lurine Meertins, Magda Pollard and Bernadette Persaud.
