A 14-year old boy of Uitvlugt, West Coast Demerara was admitted to the Georgetown Public Hospital yesterday afternoon with a screwdriver lodged in his left foot.
Jonathon Sutton, a student of the Vergenoegen Community High School, was reportedly running an errand for an older brother when the incident occurred. His mother, Sandra Sutton related to this newspaper at the hospital yesterday that her son went across to the neighbouring village of Stewartville to borrow a screwdriver for his brother who was repairing a television set. She said he was running along the road around 9 am yesterday, when the screwdriver fell out of his hand and got stuck in the ground. The young man then accidentally stepped on the screwdriver, which entered his left foot. He was rushed to the Leonora Cottage Hospital before being referred to the Georgetown Public Hospital with three-quarters of the object lodged in his left instep.
The young man was crying out in pain at the hospital yesterday.
According to his mother she was at work in the city, where she does domestic work, at the time of the incident. She said her son waited in agony at the Admissions Unit of the Georgetown hospital from around lunchtime yesterday and was only attended to by a doctor around 4 pm.
The mother of nine said that her son had not attended school since last year. She said since her husband died five years ago she has been having difficulty attending to her children’s needs.
The teenager was preparing to undergo surgery at the medical institution yesterday afternoon to have the screwdriver removed from his foot.
