A 34-year-old woman, who told the court that she slashed another woman with a broken glass bottle shortly after she was pushed away from fighting with the woman’s friend, was remanded to prison yesterday when she appeared at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.
Cheryl Rambarran, of Dia-mond, East Bank Demerara pleaded guilty with an explanation to the charge of unlawful wounding when Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson read it to her.
Rambarran admitted that she unlawfully and maliciously wounded Carol Beaton on April 30.
She told the court that on that day she and a friend had gone to a nightclub and were sitting at the door, “then we hear de ‘Radika’ song that I like and we went fuh dance”.
Rambarran said while she was dancing, a woman approached her and told her that a friend was asking for her at the door. She said she went to the door but saw no one and returned to the dance floor.
She said that a short while after, Beaton approached her from behind, tapped her on her shoulder and asked her “yah could remember me?” She that she told Beaton she did not know her and it could be a case of mistaken identity.
Rambarran said Beaton asked her the same question two more times and then threw a bottle of beer in her face. She said they went outside where a scuffle started, but she broke loose and jumped onto a friend’s motorcycle.
She said that as the friend was about to ride off she was dragged off the bike. She said she then realized that she was surrounded by several women, including Beaton who started beating her.
Rambarran claimed that she then picked up a glass bottle, broke it and defended herself. “I start juk who ever and wha ever,” she narrated.
She said she then escaped and ran back to her friend who immediately rode off with her.
However, Beaton claimed that she had gone into the club and discovered her friend and Rambarran fighting.
She said she pushed them away from each other but Rambarran became annoyed. She said the two of them then started arguing, at which point she threw a cup of ice water in Rambarran’s face. She said she then left the club to use the washroom at another building and Rambarran approached her from behind, took out a razor and slashed her upper lip, chest and left hand. She claimed that Rambarran did not have a broken glass bottle.
She further stated that Rambarran then ran away while she ran outside to get a vehicle to take her to the hospital.
The prosecution stated that Rambarran had been in hiding ever since and that the friend who had given her the ride home was arrested. Rambarran was recently found and taken to the police station where she was charged. The magistrate subsequently ordered that Rambarran be remanded to prison and that she appear back in court on May 25 where Beaton will present a medical certificate for the wounds she sustained as a result of the incident.
