A father of four was yesterday refused bail when he appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court accused of carjacking at a stoplight.
It is alleged that on April 30 at Georgetown, Moses Glasgow, 32, of 149 Third Street, Alexander Village, being armed with a gun, robbed Kwesi Collins of two cell phones valued $70,000 and $35,000, property of the said Kwesi Collins. He also allegedly robbed Rushell Roach of one motor car valued $2.3M, property of the said Rushell Roach.
Glasgow was not required to plead to the charge when it was read to him.
Roach was not present in court and when given a chance to respond Collins replied, “I don’t want to say anything at this point in time.”
The attorney representing Glasgow told the court that he has been acquainted with the defendant all his life and his character is not one that would be involved in criminal activities. The lawyer explained that his client was in the process of having documents processed so as to purchase the car from a man who had indicated that he was selling the vehicle. The attorney emphasized, however, that his client was ignorant of the fact that the car was stolen.
The lawyer said, “My Worship, my client had no idea that the car he had purchased was stolen. In my presence at the police station the police was told about the individual from whom my client had bought the car and they had all admitted to knowing that person and spoke of how they would have arrested him since they know who it is. Instead My Worship, my client is the one that has been locked up.”
The lawyer then made an application for bail to be granted in a reasonable sum on the grounds that his client had no previous convictions, posed no risk of flight and had been in full cooperation with the police in their investigations.
Police Prosecutor Denise Griffith however objected to bail. According to Griffith, the virtual complainants were in the car at a stoplight when the defendant approached them, held them at gun point and relieved Collins of the cash and two cell phones and Roach of the car.
The defendant was subsequently refused bail and his matter was transferred to Court Five for May 25.
