The first round of the inaugural Georgetown Football Association (GFA) Trix Under-17 Football Tournament commences next Saturday at the Georgetown Football Club ground (GFC) following its official launching yesterday in the boardroom of Bryan and Fernandes.
A simple ceremony which included marketing representatives of the sponsor and members of the GFA was conducted before the handing over of the sponsorship cheque to the football association.
The Santos Football Club will clash with the Fruta Conquerors in the opening match of the first double header at 8:00am that has Uprising and Pele contesting in the feature match up at 10:00am.
A total of twelve teams registered under the GFA are listed for the tournament and are divided into three groups.
Group A consists of Santos, Fruta Conquerors, Alpha United and GFC. Group B consists of Uprising, Pele, Riddim Squad and Flamingo while in Group C are Thomas United, Renaissance, Sunburst Camptown and Western Tigers.
These teams will be competing for the top prize of the Trix Trophy and bragging rights for a year while trophies for the other top three teams and individual prizes such as the Most Valuable Player (MVP), Highest Goal Scorer, Best Goal Keeper and Most Disciplined team are also up for grabs.
All matches in the tournament are scheduled to be contested on the GFC and Camptown football fields but if those two venues become unavailable the matches will be pushed to either the Parade Ground or Tucville Playfield.
Bryden and Fernandes’ Marketing Coordinator Mark Kendall stated in his brief remarks that it was a great pleasure to work with the GFA to assist in the development and promotion of football.
“The management of Bryden and Fernandes Inc. would like to thank the Georgetown Football Association for selecting us the sponsor for this venture and look forward to a continued relationship with the organization,” Kendall declared.
He added that, “During the ten weeks of competition we would like to see the teams among themselves showcasing a good brand of football and excellent sportsmanship.”
GFA’s Jason Benjamin said in reply that, “I am positive that the skills to be imparted through the medium of this football competition will greatly enhance our youths today and fill part of the void that lies open like the gaping hole in the mouth of a volcano. I am positive that the support which the GFA needs and is being supported by the Bryden and Fernandes group will encourage others to get on board. We need to continue this trend of investing in our richest resource – that of our people.”
In closing, he said that the company must be applauded for their efforts in promoting positivism on their maiden voyage.
