Head of the Department of Liberal Arts Dr Paula Morgan says there is a need to address the concerns of the state of Caribbean children. She made the comment at yesterday’s launch of a Cultural Studies conference exploring issues surrounding Caribbean childhood. The two-day event was hosted by the Department of Liberal Arts, UWI, St Augustine.
The theme of the conference was ‘First There Must Be Children: The Child and The Caribbean Imagination’. Morgan said, “We are flirting with the dangerous notions of a failed state. Despite the iconographic representations of Caribbean children, there is concern about their state.
“We are sorely lacking in institutional structure.” She called on academics and writers to examine the impact of sexual and criminal violence, disassociated consciousness, fear reflex and the violence of everyday existence which impact on their lives.
