CARACAS (Reuters) – Police raided a house on Thursday owned by the president of a leading Venezuelan television station critical of President Hugo Chavez, who has threatened to punish the channel in recent days.
Police accompanied by the national guard entered the building belonging to Globovision President Guillermo Zuloaga to investigate the presence of a fleet of vehicles there, police chief Wilmer Flores said in televised comments.
Zuloaga said in an interview on his own station that the cars were part of a legitimate business and questioned the need for such a large police operation. Venezuela’s main private television station, RCTV became a cable-only network two years ago when Chavez refused to renew its terrestial license because it was implicated in a brief coup against him.
