Elishaba Johnson, Priscilla Greaves and Khalil Ninvalle came out champions in their respective categories when the National Sports Commission (NSC) sponsored, Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) annual Independence tournament served off at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall yesterday.
Playing in the Boys’ Under-10 championships, Johnson downed Kyle Edghill in straight sets 11-1, 11-8 and 11-8 to take the title.
In the third place play off, Rajid Muneshwar, who went down to Johnson in the semi-finals had a tough time getting by Samuel Desir and had to come from a set down before triumphing.
Scores in their match were 7-11, 11-8, 9-11, 11-16 and 12-10.
Greaves easily won the girls under-10 title by taking down Jamali Homer 12-10, 11-8 and 11-7.
Meanwhile, in the under-8 championship, Ninvalle, after putting away Timothy Chang in the semi-finals, continued his impressive form to beat Amit Mookram in the final for the title.
Ninvalle won the first two sets 11-7 and 11-8 but Mookram came back strong and won the third 3-11. But the eventual winner proved his mettle and claimed the fourth set 11-6.
Third place went to Jeremy Singh who defeated Chang 11-8 and 11-8.
The tournament will continue tomorrow at the same venue with the under-13, 15 and 18 championships and the boys and girls’ doubles.
