Jason Khalil produced a stunning upset over the number-one ranked Under-19 player Oliver Downes on the fourth night of the Woodpecker Products-sponsored National junior squash championships at the Georgeton Club courts.
In the biggest upset of this year’s tournament, an obviously over confident Downes fell to the hungrier Khalil who even had match point at 10-8 in the third game.
Downes, however saved that humiliation but could not derail the onrushing Khalil who brought the proceedings to its inevitable conclusion 11/9 in the fifth.
Khalil is now favoured to add the U-19 title to the U-15 and U-17 titles which he has virtually wrapped up already.
Downes will hope that Khalil loses to Raphael deGroot if he is to have any chance to getting back into contention for the title.
