The CIOG said the nation must resolve to curb exploitation and face other challenges head-on if it is to chart a future that builds on the sacrifices of ancestors, as it observes Guyana’s 43rd independence anniversary today.
In a press release the Central Islamic Organisation of Guyana (CIOG) urged citizens not to exploit each other and not to resign themselves to inclinations to migrate and to suicide, domestic violence and HIV that has already reached alarming levels. It said too if the nation does not set national priorities while demonstrating the courage to make uncompromising changes in the government and economic system it is likely to fail to maximise its potential.
“One cannot be resigned to the heavy-handedness of the bureaucracy which, unfortunately, reminds us of our past,” it said.
It added that 43 years have elapsed since the nation has unyoked itself from colonialism in the hope of creating a just and equitable society and as such citizens should reflect on the past, identify shortcomings in order to chart a better future.
The CIOG said it is humbled by the sacrifices of forebears who struggled to preserve, protect and expand on liberties such as the right to think, speak and worship freely.
“In liberating oppressed peoples and demonstrating [honour] and bravery in every facet of life, our people reflect the best of our nation.” It urged citizens to be introspective and to challenge themselves to make greater efforts to develop Guyana.
