Fifty-six years after it was formed the Women’s Progressive Organisation (WPO) says that it is proud to say that it has played a fundamental role in shaping the political and social landscape of Guyana.
In a message to mark its anniversary, the WPO said it continues to lead not only in the political mobilisation of their women, but also to bring them into the mainstream of the development process in Guyana. It said it have had many successes with women at the helm of government and non-governmental structures, women owning businesses and becoming executives and many their strides.
It was pointed out that Guyana has some of the most modern pieces of legislation as they relate to women and gender equality. However, the WPO said women still face many challenges, including issues such as gender stereotypes and violence, especially domestic violence.
According to the message the WPO has been working with groups and communities all over the country as part of the government campaign to stamp out violence against women.
And in wishing the country a happy independence the WPO reaffirmed its commitment to continue to champion the rights of women in Guyana.
