Berbicians will have another chance to test their volleyball skills today when former national volleyball player Charles “Wheels” Henry organizes a grand one-day tournament for teams in Berbice.
The tournament which will be known as the Charles Henry inter-club volleyball tournament will be played at the GTM hard court, Lad Lane and Strand Streets, New Amsterdam, beginning at 09:00hrs.
The tournament has attracted teams from throughout Berbice and nine teams including Rollers, Albion, Blairmont, Port Mourant, Letter Kenny and three teams from the Guysuco Training Centre and Crabwood Creek, have signaled their intention to participate.
Henry, better known as “Charlie’ who now resides in the United States of America, was a one-time stalwart who represented this country from 1976-1985 when he migrated.
He made his debut at the tender age of 17 and was a regular starter on the national team thereafter.
A number of present and past players are expected to participate in the day’s activity, including president of the Guyana Volleyball Association Lenny Shuffler, former national stalwarts in attorney-at-law Basil Williams, Bertie Bradford, Clifton Phillips and Levi Nedd who would have played on some national teams with Henry.
Other Berbice stalwarts in Benny Sukhra, Gregory and Tony Rambarran and present nationals Shawn Sutherland and Sean Glasgow, Romel Bansi and Sean Best will also be on show.
At the end of the competition which will be declared open by Commissioner of Police, Henry Greene and `B’ Division Commander George Vyphius, the top four teams and outstanding players will receive trophies and other incentives.
Among the individual prizes up for grabs are the most valuable player, best spiker, best setter, best server and the best defender, and a female exhibition game is also carded.
The tournament will be coordinated by national coach and former captain Nedd while Bradford will take care of the officiating duties.
