The Cliff Anderson Sports Hall will be buzzing today when the second annual Beepat Scorpions Inter-organization basketball tournament bounces off.
According to the organizers, this year’s tournament is shaping up to be much bigger than last year’s since more companies have registered signaling their interest in participating.
“Thirty-three teams have shown their interest this year but so far 17 have registered….most of the teams will be registering tomorrow (today) at the Sports Hall, so it will be much bigger than last year,” said coach of the Scorpions team Vijay Panday.
Ainlim, led by national forward Royston Siland, swept through the tournament last year taking out Barama in the final to capture the crown. It is expected that the company would be returning in an effort to make it two championships in a row.
However, Barama, who was led by Trevor Profitt, have already shown their interest in the tournament again.
Meanwhile, the media boys are expected to put aside their cameras and notepads and take to the court once more.
Last year the side was narrowly booted out in the first round by the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) but this time around it is reported that they have regrouped and would be coming very strong.
The media squad reads: Rawle Toney, Kiev Chesney, Yannick December, Edison Jefford, Shane Storm, Ruben Stoby, Sheldon Braithwaite, Ryan Gullen, Avinash Ramzan, Keri Isle and Mark Wills.
The tournament has drawn some of the country’s top businesses to the sponsorship table, including Medicare Pharmacy, Giftland OfficeMax, White Castle Fish Shop, GT&T Cellink, KP Thomas Construction, Shell Service Station, Ricks Sari, Pro Graphics and Banks Malta.
Jump ball time is 9:00am.
