Residents of Area Q, Turkeyen have hired an attorney to look into their interests relating to the Turkeyen Children’s playground.
The residents had expressed concern to this newspaper early last month about the future of the playground, since according to them, personnel from the Guyana Lands and Surveys Commission (GL&SC) had been observed inspecting the playground and driving markers into certain parts. The GL&SC officials had related to the residents that the area was earmarked for 12 house lots.
Repeated efforts by this newspaper to obtain a comment from the GL&SC on the matter proved futile.
A resident told this newspaper on Thursday that development of the playground has been affected recently by inclement weather. The playground already has a cricket pitch while infrastructural work has been carried out to other sections of the ground. The resident related that, while the future of the playground has not reached the attention of the courts, the community decided to hire the attorney to safeguard their interests.
Stabroek News understands that two attorneys had applied for injunctions in the courts on behalf of residents of Bel Air Springs and New Providence on the East Bank of Demerara in relation to similar issues.
A resident of Bel Air Springs told this newspaper that the authorities had planned to convert the playground located within the community into a housing area; however a prominent attorney has since secured an injunction on behalf of the community preventing the authorities from carrying out any work.
