(Trinidad Express) – The Royal chauffeur suspended after allegedly accepting money to show two undercover reporters around Buckingham Palace has turned out to be a Trinidadian who once worked as a constable at the San Fernando Police Station.
Brian Sirjusingh emigrated to the United Kingdom about eight years ago, according to his colleagues with whom he worked. He told them he planned to pursue a law degree.
Sirjusingh’s conduct is now the subject of an investigation by Buckingham Palace, after a weekend expose by a British newspaper alleging that he took 1,000 pounds sterling to give two men posing as Middle East businessmen a private tour of the royal garage.
During the tour, Sirjusingh, on video and audio tape, is heard making statements about Queen Elizabeth II and inviting the men to sit in her limousines.
The story has caused a furore in the UK, with Scotland Yard reportedly probing the breach of security.
The Express was told that Sirjusingh lived in a village near San Fernando and worked for several years at the Marabella Police Station, where, after taking special training at Police Barracks, he became a driver of patrol vehicles, with a stint as an E-999 responder.
A colleague said, “We always knew he would make it far because he never wanted to stay a small-time police. He wanted to do law.”
Sirjusingh is said to have left for the UK with a relative who is a nurse there.
He has resigned from the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service.
