A prisoner was last night rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital after reportedly being stabbed by another in his chest.
The injured prisoner is 19-year-old Mortimer Melville, who was reportedly stabbed in the upper right-side of his chest. Stabroek News was unable to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the incident.
When this newspaper contacted Director of Prisons Dale Erskine last evening he did not deny that the incident occurred but said that he could not comment. He advised this newspaper to contact the Ministry of Home Affairs.
The incident once again brings the issue of prisoner’s access to weapons under the radar.
In January, 51-year-old Clive Gill Snr, just one day after being found guilty of killing his son, had to be hospitalized after a failed suicide attempt. The man was found with several stab wounds about his body allegedly committed with a sharpened toothbrush. Erskine had told this newspaper after the incident that it was unclear how Gill got access to the improvised weapon.
