Two suspects, wanted in connection with the murder of former Guyana Power and Light Incorporated (GPL) Security Head Clifford Peters, were arrested by police on Wednesday night.

Peters of Essequibo Street, Lamaha Springs (Joint Services Housing Scheme), died shortly after one of two armed men shot him in the neck, chest and about his body on May 4. He was rushed to the Davis Memorial Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.

Peters and other GPL personnel were engaged in the removal of illegal electricity connections when the incident occurred. Two men had reportedly approached a GPL linesman. An argument developed and the linesman called out to Peters who intervened and was shot multiple times by one of the men. The men, according to the police, escaped with Peters’ licensed revolver.

A senior police source had said that the motive of the attack was not robbery. The same source reported yesterday that two men, who police have been hunting for in connection with Peters’ murder, were arrested on Wednesday night. The men, according to the source, are being questioned but there is “no concrete indication” of whether charges will be laid against them.

Meanwhile, 22-year-old Arnim Griffith has been accused of being a member of a gang of men who allegedly murdered Peters earlier this month. Griffith appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson on May 11 charged with the capital offence of murder.

He was not required to plead to the indictable charge. Griffith’s lawyer, Basil Williams had described the charge “one of the tragedies of our justice system.” The matter was adjourned to June 5 providing time for the prosecution to seek legal advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions.
