A Guyanese was on Tuesday last sentenced to three years in prison in Nevis after he pleaded guilty to stealing a laptop, a silver ring, penknife and a cellular phone from a home.
According to media reports, are that Jevon Fraser was sentenced by Magistrate Clarke after he accepted that he entered the home of the Schiwamber family and removed the items while they were out.
Fraser had initially pleaded not guilty to the charge but after he heard the evidence against him he accepted that he was the one who stole the items. One of the family members had testified that Fraser had gone to their home earlier and asked for a glass of water which was given to him.
A police officer had told the court that he had gone to Fraser’s home and observed him giving someone cash from his pocket and while he was doing so a penknife fell out. He was arrested and questioned about the missing items. Fraser told the police that he had bought the knife in St Kitts and that he sold the laptop to Andrew Simon for EC$1,000 because he could not afford EC$1500. Simon denied buying the laptop stating that if someone attempted to sell him a laptop that cheaply he would not buy it because he would know it was a stolen item.
After he pleaded guilty the magistrate told the Fraser if he returned the laptop his sentence would be reduced but five minutes after he was escorted out of the court by two policemen he returned as he had no idea where the laptop was.
Fraser was spared deportation because his family members are naturalised citizens of Nevis.
