LONDON, England, CMC – Former West Indies batsman Wavell Hinds stroked an aggressive half-century for Derbyshire but could not save them from a comprehensive eight-wicket loss to Nottinghamshire yesterday.
Playing in the Twenty20 Cup at Derby, the left-handed Hinds made 66 from 45 balls with seven fours and two sixes to lift the hosts to 158 for five off their allotted 20 overs.
But England’s Graham Swann, better known for his off-spin, slammed 90 from 47 balls with 13 fours and two sixes as Nottinghamshire reached their target with 29 balls remaining.
Sent in to bat, Derbyshire were quickly reduced to 16 for two before Hinds shared a stand of 115 for the third wicket with opener Greg Smith who stroked 52 from 37 balls with one four and four sixes.
Derbyshire were still in the hunt when they had Notts at 47 for two but Swan found an ally in Adam Voges (45 not out) to post an unbroken 112 for the third wicket, to steer their side to victory.
At Hove, Barbados and West Indies batsman Dwayne Smith produced a solid all-round performance to guide Sussex to an eight-wicket win over Hampshire.
Smith grabbed two for two from his solitary over to help limit Hampshire to 122 for seven and returned to play an uncharacteristically disciplined, unbeaten 31, to guide Sussex to victory with 17 balls left.
The right hander hit three fours off 29 balls and shared an unbroken 73-run, third wicket stand with Chris Nash whose 56 required 47 balls and contained six fours and a six.
At the Riverside Ground, former Jamaica and West Indies all-rounder Gareth Breese hammered a cameo 37 for Durham in losing effort against Leicestershire.
Entering the fray at 90 for six after Durham opted to bat, Breese slammed seven fours and a six off just 15 balls to give the innings life, in a whirlwind 43-run stand with Kyle Coetzer (39 not out) which propelled the hosts to 144 for eight.
However, Paul Nixon (53 not out) and opener Jim Allenby (53) hammered half-centuries to carry Leicestershire to an uncomplicated seven-wicket win.
