Designer Sonia Noel is edging closer to the official launch of her “triple treat projects” and has already kicked off workshops for the hopefuls.
Guyana Model Search 2K9, Designer Portfolio and the Stylist competitions will kick off on June 7, but as Sonia puts its, “the fun is about to begin”.
Sonia recruited designer, Derek Moore to host the first workshop for the hopefuls in the respective categories at the Duke Lodge, Kingston on Saturday last. She noted that while Derek shared his expertise he was firm on what the competitions are about and also what they expect from those selected to move onto the next round.
The preliminary round is next and number of the hopefuls would be trimmed to 24 models, 12 designers and 6 stylists. Sonia said that the decision to cut people is always difficult, but pointed out that many of those who are sent home usually benefit from training.
“We try to make the experience worthwhile and though we have to send people home many leave with some training. We expect that they would build on that and hopefully return next year stronger,” Sonia added.
She said Derek has agreed to work with those selected and he is excited about the coming days. Sonia said also that Derek sees real potential in many of those in the running this year, and is therefore optimistic about how the shows will unfold.
The shows are to be televised live weekly on HJTV and TTS in Bartica, according to Sonia. Model Vivienne Dash will host the Model Search TV show, while Sonia herself will host Stylist and Designer Portfolio shows.
While she admitted to being under some pressure given the responsibilities Sonia said she is excited about the projects, and she is “ready to go”. Meanwhile, Sonia is part of a team of designers representing the Caribbean in Atlanta, USA, at the Virgin Islands Fashion Week promotion from May 25th thru today. Sonia will also join the designing line-up for the VI Fashion Weekend in October this year.
Henry Marsham, CEO of VI Fashion Weekend, praised Sonia in a recent press release. He was quoted as saying that, “Noel has a diversified fashion line that includes affordable apparel with a distinct appeal to business professionals and after five dining. I am pleased with Sonia’s long commitment with our fashion week and it is indeed a pleasure to see the growth she’s had with her line and being rank with the top names in the region”.
