The spate of fatal accidents in Berbice continued yesterday when a teenager and a man were killed by a car that was reported to have been speeding at the time.
Dead is Abigail Walrond of Fyrish Village, Corentyne, and Salim Mohamed, 48, also of Fyrish. The teenager was riding her bicycle along the Kilcoy Public Road when the driver of the car lost control and struck her down, while Mohamed was reportedly fixing a vehicle by the side of the road when he was hit.
Stabroek News was informed that the car was travelling down the road “at top speed” when the accident occurred around 1.30 pm. The driver struck Walrond then hit the back of a Mitsubishi Lancer which was parked on the left shoulder of the road. The impact sent the car flying to the opposite side. The out-of-control car then collided with a four-runner vehicle parked at a mechanic’s shop.
A hire car driver at the scene told this newspaper yesterday that he had to pull into the corner to “save me life” minutes before the driver lost control of the vehicle.
Stabroek News was told that the driver of the car fled the scene after the accident. This newspaper observed that his car had reinforced steel rods, which may have afforded him some protection from the impact.
The police are investigating.
