A special six-week literacy and numeracy training programme for Grade Six students in all primary schools began yesterday.
The Ministry of Education through the National Centre for Resource Development (NCERD) is conducting this programme which is designed to help students, who have already written the National Grade Six Examinations, cope with the secondary school programme in September, according to a release from the Government Information Agency (GINA).
The programme which was introduced last year focuses on upgrading the literacy and numeracy skills of students and is aimed at fast-tracking literacy attainment.
The ministry, GINA stated, holds the view that when students move to secondary school with literacy training, they would have an advantage to benefit from instruction in their new schools.
Meanwhile, the programme’s success depends on the co-operation of parents and on having all teachers being supportive of those who will be leading the programme in schools. In that light the ministry is encouraging parents to ensure that their children participate, GINA added.
